Referrals

For Pediatricians & Primary Care

Toddler screening catches many autistic children, but not all. This page is about the ones it misses.

Dr. Tutty evaluates children from age 5 to 22. Many of the patients referred at these ages are verbal, bright and doing well enough academically that autism wasn't raised earlier.

When to Refer

  • Parents or teachers raise social difficulties, rigid behavior or sensory sensitivities
  • Anxiety, depression or school refusal with social features that seem out of proportion
  • An existing ADHD diagnosis where social problems remain after treatment
  • A girl or young woman with long-standing social exhaustion or difficulty with friendships
  • A gifted child whose behavior or social life doesn't match their ability (possible 2E)
  • A family needs documentation for an IEP, 504 plan or college accommodations

What You Receive

A written report with a clear statement about autism and any co-occurring conditions, such as ADHD, anxiety or a learning disability, plus cognitive, academic, attention and emotional findings. Recommendations are divided into home, school and clinical sections, including guidance for treating clinicians. Families can share the report with your office.

Under Age 5

For younger children in New York City, the Early Intervention Program (birth to 3) and the Committee on Preschool Special Education (3 to 5) are the usual routes for evaluation and services.

Practical Details

  • One full day of in-person testing at 353 Lexington Ave
  • Feedback in person or by video
  • Full evaluation plus report typically takes 2–3 weeks
  • No direct insurance billing; families receive paid invoices with insurance codes
